Herbert Singleton

August 27, 2023

Obituary

Herbert Singleton was born July 6, 1942, to the late Eddie Grant and Mary Julia Singleton in Charleston, South Carolina. He received his early education at Jones Island elementary school. Having to give up school to be of help to his grandmother and the family, he began working early in his young life. Herbert came to New York looking for roads paved in gold not knowing there were no paved roads but more work opportunities. Here is where he met his wife Annabell also from Charleston SC in 1965 and married January 17, 1966. In this union three children were born, Janice Y, Vernessa M, and Herbert J, all of New York City. Here in New York Herbert worked as a presser for several years, (we had pressed and starched clothes going to school not a wrinkle in site). he then got hired as a maintenance worker with union 32BJ for 30+yrs. He was baptized at the Greater Refuge Temple Church in 1976 along with his six-year-old son. This was his home church. Late 2022 began his journey in the fight against cancer. In 2023 as he defeated one cancer another came forward in another part of his body. During this time, we believe it became overwhelming for him and there was no fight left in him. He fought for as long as he could then cancer took its toll on him. Herbert was able to spend time at home with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchild before his descent.

On August 27, 2023, God was ready for Herbert Singleton as he waved goodbye to his loving wife of 57yrs. and was taken home. He was predeceased by sisters Louise Dancey and Elaine Singleton and Brothers Fred and Willie Singleton. He is survived by his Loving wife Annabell Singleton, their three children Janice Yvette Singleton, Vernessa Maria Singleton, and Herbert Jajuan Singleton (Evette). Grandchildren Darrell D. Singleton, Darnell E. Singleton, Keysha N. Singleton, Ericka J. Singleton, Jayden C. Singleton, Jeremiah J. Singleton, and Noah J. Singleton and great grandchild Xavier D. Singleton. His Nieces Jeanette Singleton of Connecticut, Cynthia Lopez of New Jersey, Theresa, and Gwendolyn Singleton of New York City; as well as nieces, nephews and family and friends from his community. Herbert has always been a hard worker and a devoted caregiver to his family. It was our time to give back to the best of our ability and he went knowing that we were there by his side every step of the way.
