Jean Harris was born on January 6, 1950, to Ava L. Gray and Ned Polite at Harlem Hospital in New York City. Jean passed away peacefully on January 23, 2025, after a life filled with love, laughter, and warmth. Jean’s early educational years were spent in the Jasper County education system, and later, she graduated from Julia Richmond High School in New York City. Immediately after high school, she began a long, successful career with North Bell Atlantic (now Verizon), where she worked for 32 years until her well-deserved retirement.
Jean was a devout and active member of her church community, a proud member of the Highway Christian Church of Christ in New York City under the leadership of Bishop J.V. Lomax. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she found strength, comfort, and joy through her spiritual connections. Those who knew Jean will remember her vibrant sense of humor, which always had a way of lightening the mood, and her incredible culinary talents. She poured love into every dish she made, often hosting gatherings filled with music, laughter, and an undeniable sense of warmth. Jean’s cooking wasn’t just about food—it was about creating moments of connection, care, and joy. She also loved music and earned the affectionate nickname “Lady Breeze” for her signature DJ style and irresistible rhythm.
In addition to her remarkable talents, Jean was known for her signature red lipstick and her calm, easygoing nature. But those who knew her well knew that, when riled, she could be a force to be reckoned with. Her fierce determination and strength were matched only by her heart of gold. When angry, she was known to say things like, “I will Hail Mary on your…” or “I will bust a cap in your…”—phrases that reflected the storm within her. But beneath it all, Jean's warmth, kindness, and love shone through. Jean leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and nurturing. She is survived by her four children: Melissa Washington, Alonzo Matthew Harris (Matt), Manuel Ortega (Scooby), and Darryl Harris; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her two sisters, Edelma R. Lutterloh-Boyd (Edye)(Craig Boyd) and Heather Nared, and two nephews, Corey Beaton and Cody Boyd, as well as a host of cousins and friends who will cherish her memory.
Jean’s beautiful smile, infectious laugh, and boundless love will be deeply missed by all who know her. May she rest in eternal peace, knowing her legacy will live on in the hearts of those she touched.
