Lucuis W Martin

Lucuis Wayne Martin, one of nine children, was born to the late Martha Bobbitt Martin and MacDonald (“Mack”) Martin in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina on June 15, 1950 where he resided until the family’s migration to New York in 1959.

Although he spent a substantial amount of time with his favorite uncle Raymond in Norfolk, his earliest and most formative years were rooted on his father’s farm in rural North Carolina. There he was able to enjoy the outdoors and be his authentic self!  He attended segregated public schools in North Carolina and after moving North, attended integrated public schools in Queens and Brooklyn, New York.  Making the adjustment to new and very different social and educational environments was not easy for Lucius.

Lucuis was a free spirit who loved people and loved the outdoors.  He could often be counted upon to bring home an extra person or two for a meal, or to rescue and care for a stray animal or two. One of his favorite activities was connecting with family and good friends for barbeque.  He was known and appreciated among his peers as one of the best barbeque chefs around, and was often invited to barbeque for their events, which he loved.  Upon meeting his partner Joyce Wright of almost twenty-five years, he learned also to love and appreciate cruising and other travel, which they quite often did.

With much support and determination, Lucuis experienced and proudly overcame many health, medical and other challenges.  A greater challenge, heart health, was one that alluded him and one that he unfortunately was unable to master.  After a warrior’s fight, he succumbed to its clutches on the morning of March 26, 2023 and joined his predeceased beloved parents Martha Bobbitt Martin and MacDonald Martin, his eldest sister Helen Delores Williams-Glaspie, his younger brothers McOrba DeVeral Martin, Alonza and Orlando.  

Surviving Lucuis are his partner Joyce Wright and loving family Tracee and AJ (aka “The Baby”); Brother - Bishop Kermitt L. Williams (Eugenia); Sister-Dorothy M. Bobbitt-Pringle; Sister- Elder Jean Mullen (Chester); Martha LeNora Martin; five nephews and five nieces: Aaron Williams, Pamela Marshall, Shikena Melton, Jamila Mullen, Kenton D. Williams, April Williams, Danielle A. Martin, C. Rashad Mullen, III, Daniel K. Martin-Melton and Kendal Williams; A host of grand nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends and well-wishers who will all remember him lovingly and miss him desperately.
